A survey conducted by Descartes Systems Group reveals that rising tariffs and trade barriers are the primary concerns for global supply chain leaders. According to the 2024 Supply Chain Intelligence Report: Escalating Challenges for Global Supply Chain Leaders, 48% of respondents cited these issues as their top challenge, followed by supply chain disruptions (45%) and geopolitical instability (41%).

This concern spans companies of all sizes, underscoring the widespread impact of evolving trade policies.

Descartes emphasized the need for organizations to strengthen supply chain analytics and resilience. Robust, technology-enabled insights can help businesses adapt to frequent tariff changes, find alternative markets, secure reliable suppliers, and gain competitive intelligence.

Jackson Wood, Director of Industry Strategy at Descartes, stated:
“Evolving tariffs and trade policies are complex issues requiring organizations to build more resilient supply chains through compliance, technology, and strategic planning. With the potential for new U.S. tariffs, importers may need to rethink sourcing strategies to mitigate rising costs.”

The survey results coincide with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s plans to impose sweeping tariffs: 25% on all goods from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% on imports from China. Stricter rules on e-commerce imports are also expected.

The study, conducted with SAPIO Research, surveyed 978 supply chain leaders across Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific. Respondents ranged from managers to CEOs, reflecting diverse perspectives on the challenges facing international trade.

This report highlights the pressing need for organizations to invest in technology and strategic planning to navigate an increasingly complex trade landscape.
